The Halloween Howl is an opportunity for the established and the newer dragon boat community to share a day of racing, food and fun and to get to know each other a little better in the process.

The Oakland Renegades Dragonboat team puts on the Howl every year to bring established dragonboat clubs, corporate, and novice teams together for racing and fun. If you’re a new or novice team, these races are a great chance to practice your sport, compete against similar crews and rub shoulders with some of the salty, long time paddlers. Also, if you’ve been contemplating transitioning into a full time club, participating in fun and affordable races is an excellent way to help make that happen. Our goal is to help grow the sport in the Bay Area.

6:30 AMArrive and set up the Paddler’s Village as well as lunch.
7:00 AMThe Cafe du Renegades will open and feed all paddlers from all the teams a home made breakfast. The breakfast is included in your fee.
 
Turn in waivers and any late payments to the registration table.
7:45Captains’ meeting
8:00 – 2:30Main body of racing for all divisions.
1:30Renegades staff will set up the after-party facility.
2:30Break down the Paddlers Village and pack up your stuff.
2:30 – 4:00After party is also included in your race fees. Renegades will provide food for post-race meal. There will be a quick awards ceremony where our one of a kind trophies will be passed out to the victorious. If you’ve been waiting to spring your Halloween costume on everybody, this is your moment.

The fee for the day of racing, breakfast, lunch and entry to the after party is $1000 per adult mixed crew. For minors (17 years & under), the fee is $700 per crew. If you have less than 20 paddlers and would still like to register a crew, the fees are $50 per adult and $35 per minor. We’ll find paddlers to fill your boat. Refunds will be given in full if notification is given before the October 25 registration deadline. No refund will be given after that date.

Each participant must COMPLETE AND SIGN THIS DIGITAL WAIVER PRIOR TO RACE DAY, submitted to Oakland Parks and Recreation Department and to Paddlesport, the event’s insurance underwriter.

Parking is available at Lake Merritt, but carpooling is advised. Cost is $5 to park all day, use the Children’s Fairy Land entrance on Grand Avenue.

The deadline for submitting your registration forms and payment for the Halloween Howl is Friday, October 25, 2025. All teams are expected to pre-pay for this event.
