Why We Howl
The Halloween Howl is an opportunity for the established and the newer dragon boat community to share a day of racing, food and fun and to get to know each other a little better in the process.
Who’s Howling
The Renegades Dragon Boat Team puts on two races at the Lake Merritt each year, the Halloween Howl in October and the Spring Charity Fundraiser in May. Both events are a chance for established Bay Area teams to get in some more racing without having to travel very far and at an affordable price. If you’re a new or novice team, these races are a great chance to practice your sport, compete against similar crews and rub shoulders with some of the salty, long time paddlers. Also, if you’ve been contemplating transitioning into a full time club, participating in fun and affordable races is an excellent way to help make that happen. Our goal is to help grow the sport in the Bay Area.
What’s To Howl About
| 6:45 AM | Arrive at the Lake Merritt Boat House and set up the Paddler’s Village. |
| 7:30 AM | The Cafe du Renegades will open and feed all paddlers from all the teams a home made breakfast with coffee, hot soup, baked goods, boiled eggs, juices, pastries and a bunch of other stuff. The breakfast is included in your fee. |
| 8:15 | Captain’s meeting. Bring the waivers for all of your paddlers. |
| 8:30 – 12:00 | Main body of racing for both competitive and novice divisions. |
| 12:00 – 12:45 | The cafe will reopen for a communal pot luck. We’re asking all teams to bring dishes to share. At 11:00 start dropping off your pot luck dishes at the cafe. Our staff will set up and serve the lunch buffet style. |
| 12:45 – 2:00 | Competitive and novice finals and novice specialty races. |
| 2:00 | Break down the Paddlers Village and pack up your stuff because now it’s party time! |
| 2:30 – 5:30 | After party upstairs in the boat house banquet room which is also included in your race fees. There will be a quick awards ceremony where our one of a kind trophies will be passed out to the victorious and then two live bands will rock the house. If you’ve been waiting to spring your Halloween costume on everybody, this is your moment. Beer and wine tickets will be available for a donation. |
